- Why do I write? Why do I do anything? mindfulness and non-doer.
Sometimes people do not like to talk about death. So, I have decided to write about writing. I have decided to write about why I write and to explore more on why I do anything at all. Why do you do what you do? Let's imagine you are a builder. You lay bricks, to build houses. You have been doing this for years and you will continue to do this. Why? Simple answer is for wages. We need money to buy food and medicine, basic needs from thousands of other expenses. If someone has, food shelter and medicine, they can live even without wages. You may have different answers, among others. Let's imagine you inherited a fortune. Or saved a lot of money you do not have to earn anymore. Still, you may do some work. From the morning till night. Even to take the food, which is on the table, you have to do some work to get it into your body. You have to get up from the bed and clean yourself when you become unclean. You have to move yourself even on your bed, otherwise you will be having a bed sore. Of course, you will do some work which are not necessarily for living, like some leisure time activities, social functions. But it doesn't change the fact that you have to work daily to maintain a living. So, I started by saying I would not write about death. Yet, this question inevitably leads us to death. Simply because to keep on living, we have to work. What about avoiding things? Sometimes we avoid things which are unpleasant for us. trying to avoid something, is also a form of doing, as it also needs to be with effort and energy. So really speaking there is only doing. Here I will summarize what we have put forward so far before moving on as it can be somewhat confusing. In summary Everyone has to do something every day to avoid death and continue living. If you do not do things you do, you would die in days. Avoiding things is not non doing. On non-doing things. Now let us imagine a state of non-doing. It will be very hard to imagine as we do not know such a state prevails. Let's say such prevails. I can show this with an example. Imagine there is a person who has lost value of doing and avoid doing. For him or her living and nonliving would not matter. He would have nothing to gain, nothing to lose. It would appear he is doing things, yet he is not doing things, as always formal doing of things is associated with gains or losses hence value. To understand this concept, you would need to understand where the value of things come from. (Values are given to mental objects by our minds, you can read about this more in here.) The if such a state prevails, would you choose that over doing things? Or would you still greed over mental values of your mental objects? More insights. More insights can be gained on the same subjects when we ask the question, "who is doing things?" That is another way to lose the value of things but this time starting from inside out. You can read more on this point of view here. Key Idea: Why do I write? Why do I do anything? mindfulness and non-doer. Understanding the values of things, values of doings, and asking questions about who I am? will help us in turn in understanding futile nature of pendulum of life. To become a non-doer. Thank you for reading: Why do I write? Why do I do anything? mindfulness and non-doer. You may also like to read: objects of mind mental representation. What is mindfulness? a definition.
- Beauty of a flower - beauty of a mind.
"A man will get his first bouquet of flowers on his death." It was a random quote on the internet let me wonder about flowers. Why are flowers such a beautiful innovation of nature. Why are we attracted to them? Purpose of flowers. It is true flowers are wonderful presentations from nature. But before us humans, flowers are really attracted by our tiny friends, insects. Really speaking nature did not have modern day man's needs in mind when they created flowers. The whole purpose of flowers was to attract pollinators, bees, bugs and all variety of animals to spread their pollen. Those bees were far more important to flowers. Colors are for them, aroma is for them, tiny drop of honey and plenty of pollen for them. If it wasn't for flowers, bees wouldn't survive and vice versa. Let us deviate from the interaction of flowers and insects and look at flowers by themselves. If you haven't watched Sir, David Attenborough's series about flowers, I recommend you watch it as he would narrate far better than me about flowers. Yet, we will discuss few more observations about flowers, in a different point of view, than traditional. Beauty of a flower. You will see flowers almost everywhere on our planet. Sometimes in very harsh places. In a crack on a rock, on a slippery mountain slope. You may see a flower on a muddy river side. When we look at flowers, we can see that they do not care where they are. They are bounded by a purpose to the world, and they are here to do it. Imagine a lotus flower. It roots from a deep mud in a pond. Traversing through the dirt, it surfaces and when its time open up its Petels. Outer more darker ones first. When you go from layer-by-layer colors are more bright and purer. Beauty of a mind A flower has the energy and means to create beauty in most unexpected places. So does our minds. It doesn't matter where you were born. A human mind can be so pure, and it can rise within itself to add to the beauty of the nature. There are enough examples from our history to prove the point. Some of them changed the course of nations. Let it be Nelson Mandela, let it be Martin Luther King Jr. We all have the seeds of this ability to become a beautiful mind. Sometimes it just needs, time and nature, until it reaches above the deep waters. Even if it doesn't change the world, it will serve its purpose. How about you? How are you going to create the peace in your mind inside the chaotic world? In summary : beauty of a flower - beauty of a mind. Flowers are created with a true purpose of spread of genetics of a plant, beauty is a side effect. Like a flower is serving its purpose anywhere it is bloomed, and beauty lies inside, mind has power inherently, if you are willing to look more and more insides of it. On the ruins in Rome -poem. I was hopping on a fallen wall in ruins of Rome. From cracks they stood up a tiny biome To prove a point, I captured it in my lenses. And looked at it again, in comfort in my home. From earth that recovered from battles so vicious Stood the celestial beauty so precious. Serving the purpose of life, she possesses Swaying in the wind, in natures canvass Thank you for reading: Beauty of a flower - beauty of a mind. - Seize the day- "carpe-diam."
Live for the moment or being mindful. Being mindful is one of the most important lessons we learn from our teachers. When I was in school around 20 years back, I can remember one of my teachers advised us to 'Live for the moment'. There was no reason to believe that was not a good advice. Even before that, we already knew, to be aware is one of the assets of being a human being, or an animal. Without being aware, we cannot enjoy a good meal, we cannot listen to good music, or we cannot rejoice the sceneries the nature provides us with. Imagine a beach were the Cristle clear waters slowly travels back and forth. Washing the sand again and again. Light winds to wash away the tiredness and reduce the weight of our heads carry with all the thoughts from the past and the unpredictability of the future. Imagine the setting sun reflected in golden colors on sand and waves. If you waddle into the water, through the sensations created by the fine sand, you will reach beyond the foamy waves to see the colorful fish from coral reefs swimming around your feet. And it is the mindfulness which provides us with such opportunities to experience the nature in its most undisturbed forms. But often we are swinging back and forth like a pendulum, as our baggage from the past is too heavy on us. We do not realize that we are stuck in our own web of thoughts woven from past and future. We realize that we cannot enjoy the beauty of now. Seize the day - Times spent on a tree. I can remember when I was a kid, at a time there were no phones, we had plenty of time for ourselves and nature. When we got back from the school, (usually I finished my homework at the school, so there was no pressure to myself to open those books back at home) I used to change myself and climb up a tree, in our garden. There were plenty of trees, short, small guava trees. there were plenty of fruits on these trees, that we could pluck and eat. I used to sit on a tree branch, pluck one of fruits hidden among leaves and eat. Once that is done, i still waited on the tree, looking at skies, green fields and occasional vehicle or a walker down the village road. Hours were spent on trees, sometimes afternoons. Mostly it is hot and humid, the tropical weather, but casual winds and shades from tree leaves, it was far better than 'weather in a room'. There was no specific task to do, there was no specific thing to think, there was no agenda, there was no deadline, exams seem always far away. Now when I think back at such times, I really cannot remember there were any thoughts at all. Maybe there was nothing. Maybe there were just thoughts about clouds, wind and the cows who graze in nearby fields, flashing across the mind like a mist. However, such times were not wasted. The silence it has created may have allowed my mind to settle over time that even an ant walking on the leaf is an amazing exiting sight. Even the water buffalo on the field grazing the mouthful of grass over and over again, wagging its ears and shaking its skin to chase away flocks of flies was a sight to see. Story of a pond - mindfulness. There was a wise man once who has been into deep parts of a forest and found a pond in the thickest parts of it. These ponds are so pure, and calm that you can see the bottom of the ponds even they are few feet's deep. He went into the water and drank a mouthful and noticed that the disturbances have created a storm in the bottom of the pond and it was no longer clear enough to see. However, he went back into the forest to do whatever his deed and when he came back from the same route, he noticed the waters were clear back again. Imagine our minds are ponds. Whenever there is an extruder taps into our information network there will be a disturbance and chaos inside and no longer, we are able to see through ourselves. However, if you let enough time aside and be patient like the nature did, there will be natural process of calming down. It would be effortless, tireless, and more importantly rewarding than anything else we do to. Carpe-diam meaning "seize the day" is a Latin term which was famously used and popularized in the film The dead Poet's Society. You would find more insights in the link to the article. In summary Seize the day- "carpe-diam. If you would like to carpe-diam, you will have to be mindful about what you are doing. Sometimes watchful waiting helps, until you are clarified of what to do.
- Motivation- Locus of control and the dual world solution
I was thoroughly unmotivated to write today. Maybe it's not just me. Maybe that is your story as well. So, what Did I do? Just like you would do. I started to watch you tube for a spark of motivation. Then I realized some of contradictory ideas about motivation within myself. It may be applicable to you too. Facts about motivation In Theory, motivation has two roots. External and internal motivation (Locus of control). Remember when Sheldon used gifts to make Penny's behavior appealing, in big bang Theory. Of course that looked unethical, however that is using external motivation. However, if you ask some artist why he even would paint while he is not selling any, or someone who play the guitar when that is not his job, that is because we are internally motivated. Few Facts to remember. Internal motivation is more rewarding, as it lets us enjoy our work. "Life is a journey not destination. " Having both internal and external motivators can make you weary. If the task is easy to do, you will need less motivation (Hence divide and conquer) Locus of control, is it with us? clashing with motivation. Now, this is the fact I noticed about myself. If you have read the articles of mine before I have written about philosophical ideas about how the self is generated. How thoughts are created and what will happen after life etc. More and more I learn about these things more and more it is evident that we have less control over our lives. Contradictory to what teachers have taught me. Even anyone who want to succeed have to think that there is a great deal in life which we can control and hence mendable outcomes. Read the poem, Science of nature. So, learning that we have, less control over life, or no control makes me not motivated at all to write or do something for changing future. It destroys the internal motivation. However, as it seems that there is no control or will over my thoughts look like a true fact, mind would not agree on anything otherwise. At least for now. So, how can I get rid of this loop of mild depression of knowing the truth? Dual worlds solution. I like to put it in practice like living in two different worlds. Like Plato mentioned. There is a platonic world I can linger in mindfulness embracing futile nature of the mind and everything it brings into my attention. The other world is the illusive world where you and I talk about these things. Where you and I exist, and we can get motivated to learn and write about the world. Where we can listen to music, paint a picture and do some measuring and math. Each world has its own rules. In summary: Motivation- Locus of control and the dual world solution knowing that our control in life is less than we expected in the beginning, clashes with our motivation. To be stay motivated, thinking these as dual worlds helps. How would you perceive the reality? It is one or duel in nature for you? - What is a life well spent? - Minimalist, Achiever, Seeker.
I will try to answer the question what is a life, well spent in a philosophical point of view. Story of happiness: I knew a boy who lived in our village, he was a cheerful boy. He wasn't a genius, average in everything. The quality I liked about him most is his manner with other people. I never saw him unhappy. Always smile on his lips. Have you known someone like that? I always wonder where their happiness comes from. Maybe there is a fountain of happiness inside their brains which always overflow them with Joy. As he spent his ever-happy life, with his friends and family he was just around 17 or 18 years old when he started to drive a van. People used to hire his van for picnics. So, they can go around the country visiting places and he is being a cheerful boy this was a great life for him as well. As it happened one day, he went out with a group on one such trip. And we heard the story that the group went on swimming in a river. Few of them got caught in fast current and were washed away. The boy, he jumped into the water to save them, and I am not sure what happened, yet he drowned in the process of trying to save others. He died a teenager. Now, I have outlived his life (he was only one or two years younger than me). Yet, I cannot think about the cheerful short life that he had. Why are such beautiful souls taken away? This also brings back the question. What is a life well spent? Was his life well spent? Of course, we have to think about how spend our lives as the life is limited as we see. It is limited by death, inevitable for all of us. Any vacation would end one day. What is the answer? One way to think about it is we have to achieve valuable things in life. Materialistic or memories which gives us a certain form of accomplishment. We can aim for higher or lower at variable risk. What is a life well spent? - Minimalist, Achiever, Seeker. Minimalist We can spend a minimalist's life settling for smaller things and aiming low. We have less chance of failure if we do not try. Example: someone would settle for a life with minimal pay and spend it on eating and drinking, just enjoying few things. An Achiever We can aim for higher at risk of failure, and if we are successful, we will be more happy, more accomplished. Example: someone would not settle for life but will raise a family, to keep the legend of him go beyond the life, build a company, write a novel or a book to feel accomplished. Most of us are limited to these two variations of each materialistic/ mental accomplishment views about life. The core idea behind both of those views is that our life is inherently valuable and have a meaning, at death we are going to lose it. A Seeker And also, there is another school of thoughts. What if our lives are not inherently valuable? If so, at death we would lose nothing, gain nothing. What would be such a life would be like? The life would be to understand the null value of life rather than chase the values of life. Some philosophers identify these two ideologies, former as western, and later as eastern patterns of thinking. What would you choose for your life to spent with? Atoms and dust - Poem I was walking on the sidewalk, And stepped on leaves and dirt. Stopped for a while to harvest some sunlight, When mind continued the walk Those dirt and leaves which I stepped on, I hear them scream in silence. They carry the atoms and molecules of my bloodline. Just a few hundred years into the past. Can't wait to be a leaf, can't wait to be some dust. I will stick in the boots of my future children. Mixed with your atoms and dust. In summary You can either be a minimalist and be happy, or chase success with risk of failure. Less known third option is to chase the meaning of life, in search of 'Truth.' Thank you for reading: What is a life well spent? Minimalist, Achiever, Seeker You may also like to read where do our values come from Can anyone live without happiness?
- On a tree top - Have you ever climbed a tree?
On a tree top - Poem I was on my way to work other day, when I heard a weep. A child hung up on the bough, ignoring his mother's cries, Mischievous he was with shimmery little eyes. Until she gave up, and left, when he slunk down the tree. Like a monkey in quick and agile moves He disappeared into the dark chasing a fowl, into the thick brackens. Such a free spirit, it was, I stared a minute where he went. He didn't come back, I was late for work when I left. Why should you climb a tree? My experience If you really want to look at a world in a different point of view you should climb a tree. When I was a kid I used to climb trees, not very tall ones, tall enough to sit and watch, tall enough to see the roof of our house. I can remember, myself always a chesty wheezy kid, but hated those tonic tasty syrup my mom used to make me swallow. I can remember myself climbing on top of a tree and my mom trying to get me down in vain. I would stay as long as I could to avoid medicine. Now when I think back about it, I can understand that it was treetops who made me see the world in a different angle. I can remember being on a treetop by the road. It was a footpath by the house where there was only occasionally a man or a women walked. I used to watch them, mostly nobody was aware I was on the tree. I wished I could sleep on the tree but was afraid will fall down. A small mango tree which never had mangoes. But a perfect hiding place to be away from a world. Sometimes hours and hours went on a tree top. Doing nothing, just with the mind. Maybe a little bit of wind to make a Noice from swaying leaves. From Flipped Movie I know at least it's not only me who liked to sit on a tree top. Julie Baker from the movie, Flipped used to climb her Sycamore tree. From Brain's point of view (her bf), it was her stupid tree. But I know it wasn't. The time on the treetop until the school bus arrived and watching the sunrise, and sunsets were her best moments of life. Unfortunately, her tree was cut down, by the authorities against all her protests. I was touched when she was given a painting of her tree, and film ended when she is helped by Brian to plant a tree in her garden. It is unfortunate that I have not been on a tree top ever since I left the school. When was the last time you were on a tree? Or are you just waiting to climb a mountain next year? In summary, advantages of being on a tree top- have you ever climbed a tree. Being on a tree gives you opportunity to be close to the nature, see the world in a different perspective. Observe nature in silence, without tiring yourself as in a hike. Thank you for reading On a tree top - Have you ever climbed a tree? - Would there be peace without a war?
What about peace? When Micheal Jackson sang years ago about burning earth, we were stunned as kids. We wanted to save our world. Yet again we are at the edge of a nuclear war. What about sunrise? What about rain? What about all the things that you said we were to gain? What about killing fields? Is there a time? What about all the things that you said was yours and mine? It is time to rethink what went wrong after all. Maybe it's not individually you responsible for anything. Collectively we are. To understand peace and war we will look at the problem in a big picture. In 100 years into the future. Imagine there is a war next few decades. I'm sure there will be so much of death and destruction, if it happened to be a world war, far beyond what we have seen in the last century. Deaths would be staggeringly high in numbers, which would not be compared to a pandemic in a serious scale. As our weapons are more powerful and more destructive, even the earth would take some time to recover. We would pollute our atmosphere with dust and smoke and acid together with nuclear waste, that consequences would still prevail for more than 100 years. Hopefully, we would be at peace in 100 years. Of course, you and I would be in a different kind of peace by that time, yet humans will prevail. Our loved ones will remain, and they will carry on another 100 years of peace, maybe 1000 years as lessons are hard learnt. Of course we might wipe out ourselves from the face of earth, in a mega scale war. If it happens the earth will revert back to animals only planet and, it will be in peace. The God's will also be in peace as there is no need to track stupid human beings to see what stupid thing that they would do next. In 1000 years, into the future. Peace would remain 1000 years, and generations will slowly forget the craters we created on our planet earth. And there will be greed for power, evil will rise again pulling the strings of innocent into another war. Of course this is imagination. I am not a predictor of the future. And if you think about this yourself, you will see, it is not difficult at all. If we look into the past 1000 years history of any country, there has been times of war, followed by times of peace, times of chaos followed by times of silence (we can use this to predict the future). We were just lucky that we were not born in times of war and chaos, somebody else did. And we are not sure what is there ahead for our children. Really speaking either is possible, in 1000 years there can be either war, or peace (if you consider individual country). It is just like the famous cat in the box thought experiment by Schrodinger. Would there be peace without a war? Now let's think about peace, prevails without war. There has not been a war for 10000 years, or even more. There are no written records of it. No one has seen war, and no one has thought about it. Would you call it peace? Of course, from our point of view there is peace. Yet if you are born in that world there would be no name for it. At least the concept of peace would not be there as there is no war to compare it with. They would be in peace, without knowing it is peace. Again, this is hypothetical. Now we have enough insight to formulate what we have to do. What is our responsibility? Individually Individually you cannot do anything about the war. Only thing you can do is try to survive if it comes at your door. And try to be in peace as long as possible. Collectively Collectively we have a huge responsibility to keep the peace as long as possible. Either as two, three, a group, a family, a political party or a country, or even as the whole human race, it is our duty to keep peace. It is inevitable we fail at some point, but that is nature. In summary War and peace are a pattern which repeat throughout the history. We are just lucky to be born in times of prevailing peace. It is our responsibility as collectively to keep the peace last long as possible. War seems to be inevitable. Thank you for reading Would there be peace without a war? - A bucket of water, Bucket of life.
Are you just a bucket of water? Water is associated with every life on planet. From single cellular organisms to multicellular organisms, from viruses to fungi to humans, water is essential. So, far best explanation for evolving life on earth is that it started as monocellular organisms on earth billion years ago and evolved into the life which prevail as of now. If that is true, the forces acting on each tiny cell in a bucket of water must be the same rules which act on us. On the other hand, someone can argue that it is not. That we, multicellular organisms are subjected to different rules of nature. Life of a microbe Let's look at a microbe (unicellular animals). There are thousands of them if you take a bucket of water from well, or a stream, or even from ocean. They Foat, they live, and they die. These monocellular organisms actually die. If you haven't seen how these organisms die, you can follow the video link. Of course, they cease to move, and stop all the other functions, and start to decay, just like we human beings. So, what does that mean? Do they also possess a soul which keep their unicell living? Does that soul also capable of going to the heaven after this unicellular life? If so, do they reborn as unicellular in Heven or become multicellular? Who keeps track of millions and billions of these tiny creatures to decide their future in this scenario? A bucket of water, Bucket of life. Moving from the bucket of water we now look at ourselves. It is a scientific fact, that as multicellular, animals, also have most of their bodies bathed in water. It is a commonly known fact that about 2/3 of our body weight is water. (around 48kg in a 72kg man) Instead living in the sea of water, we carry a bucket of water with us everywhere we travel. It is a tradeoff between, mobility vs better survival. And evolution decided, it is better to move than risk staying in the same place and getting extinct. This has the side effect of we are needing more energy to move. Not only moving, if you look at carefully what we are doing by means of "living" is essentially same as what a unicellular organism does in the water. We immerse each and every cell in our body in water (we call it extracellular fluid) and supply our hard-earned food, digested into small particles so these cells can survive. We maintain a good supply chain, by means of a pump, a network of vessels and blood inside. Maintaining the bucket of water is so called living. And truly speaking if it is not for the skeletons, we would be able to be filled inside a bucket easily, like goo. So, where does this fact leave us? I wouldn't say I am so sure at this moment. Maybe we think about things too complicated that we forget the simple facts about ourselves. Maybe souls are not such unique and is abundant in nature. What do you think about your bucket of water? Following is a paragraph from the book What is time? World of Goo. You may have played the famous game “world of goo” on your pc or on your smartphone. And as the story goes there's a race between goo balls and ‘world goo corporation’ and building a tower and finding z dimension in the 2D world. In this chaos of goo story, ultimately, they reach the far away planet to populate it with more goo. And it seems sarcastic to think that we are represented with these goo balls, which we help to navigate rivers and build towers with. And it was shown that if all the seven billion people on our planet were put together into a giant goo ball it would expand over just under one kilometer in diameter. And putting it into perspective we can keep the human goo ball in the middle of the central park in New York and it will be expanding only 100 meters beyond either side of the width of the park. Compare it to the immense size of our planet and see how insignificant we are on our own planet just in comparison of size. In summary. Every living creature on earth depends on water. We carry a bucket of water with us everywhere we go. Living is simply maintaining the bucket of water. Compared to our planet we are insignificant just like a microbe in a bucket of water. ... - On existence of the God and atheism.
Is there exist a God? who is mighty and powerful who can help us to avert our death? This is one of way to think about when we think about afterlife, that we are judged by the God and given a chance to be eternal or to be punished. So, the God must be powerful and Fair. How can we find answers to this question? Atheist's view Atheists believe there is no evidence for a god to exist. It is true there is no evidence of a god exist. You may also believe this if you are following the science. As science so far has not given evidence for existence of a God other than beliefs of human beings. An Atheist would say, So far, we haven't seen any God. Haven't photographed God. Have not seen anyone directly helped by God. So called miracles have no scientific basis, some of them mere by chance. Bad things happen to good people and good things happen to bad people. So, there cannot be a God. God doesn't exist. Theist's view On the other hand, Theist would say, this is not enough evidence to reject God's existence. Although we cannot see and hear what God is, will surely be judged at the end of the life. God have plans for us, nobody knows God's plans. Good or bad given to us in life are part of this God's plan and we have to be kind compassionate when we react to these. So, how can we approach counter arguments. We would never be able to prove or disprove the God's existence. But what we can do is infer characteristics of God, if exist. Let's look at the following statement. Characteristics of God If there is a God, who is powerful and good. Would you think he would not help anyone poor, or diseased or illtreated? Yet we see, good things happen to bad people and bad things happen to good. We see tsunamis, and famine affecting rich and poor, good and evil alike. Why does God wait, if exist until we die to take us to eternity? If God can show us themselves once, will it not make us good? This is why Niel deGrasse once said, "by looking at the world I see no evidence, for the God to be Both powerful and Good at the same time." This means, if God exists either is not powerful to help us on earth or God is not all Good. And we don't have evidence for God's influence on afterlife. Following is a paragraph in book What is time? on the subject. At times of war crime is not considered a crime. "Let's imagine a criminal, let's imagine a criminal who has done a lot of crimes, serious crimes from theft to killing innocent men and women. Now imagine one day the criminal wakes up and realizes that he wants to become a good person. Despite all the crimes he has done his inner self awakens and decides that he is to end the criminal life forever. And he does go to the god’s court and asks for forgiveness. What do you think God should do? Should God punish him by sending him to a prison? Or should the god punish him inflicting the same pain as he has put others through? If the god is pure and kind, I would suggest otherwise. I would suggest the God will understand his good intentions and grant him permission to grant him to be good. Do not you agree, after all it is God. God is unlimited kindness; how can he be having evil thoughts like sending a man to the underworld? And the next question is somewhat difficult. Now imagine the same man, after God's pardon, he falls into the evils again and does another crime. This time he is facing the same God in the same court of justice and asked for forgiveness. What should God do this time? Should God punish the man? Or should God think this man has broken his words against the court, this time he should be punished more? I would suggest otherwise, if God is pure and kind, he will forgive the poor man, and further he will forgive each and every time he appears in the court. Until one day he will really keep his promise and never appear in court, he will be treated with kindness." .... What do you think about God? Prisoner's view Poem Looking through the window Of the empty tower I cannot see beyond the horizon, Where water lilies flower Crimes of the past when they haunt me an every hour. Curled on the floor when they bleed, sweet memories We savored. In summary on existence of the God and atheism: Atheists believe in God, theist do not. In reality there is no evidence for both. However, we can infer characteristics of God (If exist) by looking at nature. Example: God cannot be both all Good and All powerful at the same time. - How to Model the world in a mathematical function.
If we think about it how to model the world in a function, we will want to know the best function possible. We have been modeling the world ever since we were born, I will take you through some of these models, and then discuss the model of the world. But for whom curious, simply put, it doesn't matter what function you choose, but world can only be a continuous function. Not a discrete one. If there is a universal function to describe the universe and everything about it, it will be a continuous function. Models of the world. We have different kinds of models of the world. If you ask a geologist, he will say the universe is made up of matter, chemicals, made up of elements form this matter which is condensed in stars and planets and Commets. And a chemist would agree with it. If you ask a mathematician, he will describe the world in functions, from Newtonian equations to quantum wave function. And he would give examples to show how the planets move and particles travel in space. And a physicist would agree with him. If you ask a philosopher, she will model the world as deterministic or stochastic and explain oneself as a duel or singular form. She would describe the god good evil and ethics. And invite student to question this. If you ask a Novelist, he will describe the world in words, record the events in written form for us to model our own world with the images. And the poet will provide a meaning to it while An artist would capture it in a drawing. Not only this, individually all of us have our own model of the world, reshaped from time to time since we understood the words which describe it. With each layer of knowledge, the model updated from v1 to now v23350987. Imagine how many models of the world out there. A universal model of the world Now if we look at a universal model of the world, to be put up by a mathematical function, it should capture everything else. It should capture every model, including, philosophical and linguistic and even artistic ones. Because all these processes are part of the universe itself. It is obvious such complex modeling is not for commoners, like day to day working co-operate minded individuals like you and me. Yet, we are capable of some intuition about such functions if we put our minds to it. You may ask why? It is to better model the world and update it to 33350987th version of it. Whatever the model scientist and mathematicians will come across in the distant future will be a continuous function. If you know some basic stuff, for a continuous function you can input any value and there will be an output. These values we input are discrete. However, the function describes a relationship of variables against each other or relative change of an input variable. So, what is constant (or common characteristic) in such a function is change. Only thing that is common to continuous functions is that it is bound with change, you can only see this if you graph the function. This is the intuition we can get when we look at the world in a hypothetical continuous function. We can expand on this idea. If something is bound to change, moment by moment, there cannot be inherent value to it. The values we see are only artificial, cross sections of the function which lasts only fraction of a time, or not at all. Does this give us opportunity not to follow rules? I would say not at all. But it will help us to understand problems otherwise unsolvable by science. As an example in understanding oneself, understanding death and happiness. You will find more about these intuitions throughout the blog. Happy hunting. In summary How to Model the world in a mathematical function: There are different ways to model the world. If there is a universal model of the world it would be a continuous function Change is a characteristic of a continuous function. Hence the world is only changing. - A Random walk for life.
Have you ever taken a random walk in your life? Maybe not. It is most likely every walk you have taken is a conscious decision you made. Random walk is a mathematical concept, where a series of steps are taken randomly from initial state and after a given time the final position will vary depending on the steps taken. Imagine you are flipping a coin, staring 0 you add 1 if it is Heads and subtract 1 if it is tails. You do it for 50 times, and path and number you end up is a random walk with 50 steps. Examples of random walk are found everywhere around us. Brownian motion When we were first introduced to biological sciences at school, we were introduced to microscopes and "Brownian motion". It is essentially a random motion of particles suspended in a medium. If you put an ink, drop into a glass of water no matter how slow you put it in, it will slowly dissolve. While looking through his microscope at pollen of the plant Clarkia pulchella immersed in water, Robert Brown saw this motion and described it random. It was named after him. To put forward how important this is, all our cells in our bodies depend on the random movement of these particles, as our cells are essentially drops of water covered by membranes. Genetic drift. Biologically genetic drift is the name given for accumulation of neutral mutations, which doesn't participate in natural selection. Even if you do not understand the biology behind this, it simply means, Total genetic map of a species evolves over time. It is a random process. There are many other places random walks are described in biology, astronomy and even psychology. More importantly in finance and computer science. Stock market. Consider the stock market. It seems the stock market is ever growing. Usually, it is with random fluctuations. Although individuals try to predict the stock market behavior by various models, it is known to be a true random process. There are too many variables come into play. Imagine that it is not. This person or group who can predict stock market are going to earn and "beat the market", while other players suffer losses. World wide web When the Web expands worldwide, travelling from one place to another through this is going to be difficult. How can you cover a lot of ground? Even algorithms behind these massive web giants use random walking in various parts of their applications, from measuring the size of the web to, providing you a list of recommended followers in twitter. Now, let's get back to our question? A Random walk for life Have you ever taken a random walk? How about since your birth? We were born in a random place. With random parents and random siblings. We played with random friends who went to school because they were also randomly born in your age and neighboring your school. How about walking in the park. Imagine you go to a park daily for a long time now. I can bet the path taken from entering to the park to getting out of it, is random in many ways. Imagine number of footsteps, exact location of each number of footsteps, imagine number of people you have met on your way, number of leaves you have stepped on. You may disagree. If you look at it, you may see patterns. Yet if you take a look at the big picture you will understand, some things in your life cannot be understood other than with randomness. If you would not believe me, you would believe Steve Jobbs, right? He was talking about connecting dots of life at an address to university crowd. This is at peak of his life. And it is truly fascinating to understand the nature of randomness in our lives. If you read the article The Boy, the dog and mathematics, I try to explain this pattern of nature in a story. More insights about thinking in general can be found here in Deterministic world and free will. In summary: Random walk is a mathematical concept of taking random steps from a starting point There are many examples for random walk in nature and science world. Our life seems to be a random walk since birth although we do not feel like it. Thank you for reading the article A Random walk for life. Have a nice random day!
- Spectrums Of nature, it's not always black and white
Have you noticed spectrums of nature? If you look at sounds, colors, tastes, and touches many things we can observe are in a spectrum. Lets look at electromagnatic spectrum, which includes, from radiowaves, microwaves to x-rays and gamma rays. Visible light as we know, is also stuck in this. If we look at visible light closely we can see, individual colors we see are also a spectrum by themselves. Lets take red color for inspection. "Red" although we name it consisit of part of the spectrum gradually changing from pink to orange. There are thousands or millions of shades of red although we cannot identify them separately. Similarly sounds that we hear are on its own spectrum. From intensity, frequency they differ from moment to moment. So, what is the use of knowing this? I cannot agree more. It can be just a knowlege. Also it will give us another perspective to look at the world. Lets imagine you are at the beach. Looking at the beautiful sunset, red color globe sinking in the sea, painting the sky with marvellous crimson and orange shades. Is it true? The truth is it is likely not one red, one crimson or one orange color that you see. Since you have been to the beach there were thousands of shades of red , crimson and orange which have been changing momemt to moment, too fast for your eyes to grab and mind to comprehend. So, at human comprehension level it is true. But at the level of nature it may be not true. But why you would ask. Why shouldn't I just enjoy the sunset? Not at all. I am not suggesting we shouldn't enjoy sunsets. But the problem with our mind is it always tries to extract something out of anything. But it seems the mind is not capable of seeing what is really happening at the moment. Whatever the memory, the light the image or the thought it generates seems not the exact thing which happens. Its just an interpretation which is true only for per person. I would rather live in a dream knowing it's a dream. Would you? You may also like to read: Rule of nature Understanding platonic love
