Is there exist a God? who is mighty and powerful who can help us to avert our death? This is one of way to think about when we think about afterlife, that we are judged by the God and given a chance to be eternal or to be punished. So, the God must be powerful and Fair. How can we find answers to this question?
Atheist's view
Atheists believe there is no evidence for a god to exist. It is true there is no evidence of a god exist. You may also believe this if you are following the science. As science so far has not given evidence for existence of a God other than beliefs of human beings. An Atheist would say,
So far, we haven't seen any God.
Haven't photographed God.
Have not seen anyone directly helped by God.
So called miracles have no scientific basis, some of them mere by chance.
Bad things happen to good people and good things happen to bad people.
So, there cannot be a God. God doesn't exist.
Theist's view
On the other hand, Theist would say, this is not enough evidence to reject God's existence. Although we cannot see and hear what God is, will surely be judged at the end of the life. God have plans for us, nobody knows God's plans. Good or bad given to us in life are part of this God's plan and we have to be kind compassionate when we react to these.
So, how can we approach counter arguments. We would never be able to prove or disprove the God's existence. But what we can do is infer characteristics of God, if exist. Let's look at the following statement.
Characteristics of God
If there is a God, who is powerful and good. Would you think he would not help anyone poor, or diseased or illtreated? Yet we see, good things happen to bad people and bad things happen to good. We see tsunamis, and famine affecting rich and poor, good and evil alike. Why does God wait, if exist until we die to take us to eternity? If God can show us themselves once, will it not make us good?
This is why Niel deGrasse once said, "by looking at the world I see no evidence, for the God to be Both powerful and Good at the same time."
This means, if God exists either is not powerful to help us on earth or God is not all Good. And we don't have evidence for God's influence on afterlife.
Following is a paragraph in book What is time? on the subject.
At times of war crime is not considered a crime.
"Let's imagine a criminal, let's imagine a criminal who has done a lot of crimes, serious crimes from theft to killing innocent men and women. Now imagine one day the criminal wakes up and realizes that he wants to become a good person. Despite all the crimes he has done his inner self awakens and decides that he is to end the criminal life forever. And he does go to the god’s court and asks for forgiveness. What do you think God should do? Should God punish him by sending him to a prison? Or should the god punish him inflicting the same pain as he has put others through? If the god is pure and kind, I would suggest otherwise. I would suggest the God will understand his good intentions and grant him permission to grant him to be good. Do not you agree, after all it is God. God is unlimited kindness; how can he be having evil thoughts like sending a man to the underworld? And the next question is somewhat difficult. Now imagine the same man, after God's pardon, he falls into the evils again and does another crime. This time he is facing the same God in the same court of justice and asked for forgiveness. What should God do this time? Should God punish the man? Or should God think this man has broken his words against the court, this time he should be punished more? I would suggest otherwise, if God is pure and kind, he will forgive the poor man, and further he will forgive each and every time he appears in the court. Until one day he will really keep his promise and never appear in court, he will be treated with kindness." ....
What do you think about God?
Prisoner's view Poem
Looking through the window
Of the empty tower
I cannot see beyond the horizon,
Where water lilies flower
Crimes of the past when they haunt me an every hour.
Curled on the floor when they bleed,
sweet memories We savored.
In summary on existence of the God and atheism:
Atheists believe in God, theist do not.
In reality there is no evidence for both.
However, we can infer characteristics of God (If exist) by looking at nature.
Example: God cannot be both all Good and All powerful at the same time.
